clueless
The film begins with the distribution company. From this we can see that the production and distribution company is paramount. The paramount logo clearly shows when this film was made which was in 1995. The logo looks very different to what it does in the background of modern day films. The colours are slightly different and it is not of a high quality picture.
The beginning of this film is very different to most films. One of the reasons for this is that whilst the paramount logo is on the screen there is normally no sound whereas in the beginning of this film the song ‘Kids in America’ by Kim Wild is playing and this carries on through as the film begins. This suggests again the time period as this song was released a few years before the film is set and the type of characters that will be in the film as this song was mainly listened to by teenagers during this time. It also begins the film with an upbeat feel as it is an energetic song which also suggests how they lead happy enjoyable lives.
It then changes to an electric blue screen with a pink circle in the middle with yellow writing in it saying ‘paramount pictures presents’ which connects the previous screen to the next ones. The colours then switch and the text changes to ‘Clueless’. The colours once again represent the time period and the age of the people that are being focused on during this time period.
It then cuts to the first shot which is an overhead shot that tilts down to follow a moving car. The music from the previous screens is carried on though to this shot giving the beginning of the film a sense of fluidity making the viewer feel relaxed. We can the main character and a few of her friends that appear through out the film which immediately introduces the viewer to these people and gives them an insight to their lives. Through sound in this shop we can hear laughing and cheering which once again sets the scene for this to be a very upbeat film.
It then cuts to a montage of short clips of the main character and her friends shopping, eating out and at a pool party. These settings immediately give the viewer an insight to the fact that they are a group of teenagers that live a very privileged life and seem to be carefree. The lighting throughout these shots is bright and natural to represent a sunny day. This suggests no sense of mystery or tension. Towards the end of the montage the main character that is focused on directly addresses the audience. She suggests that her life looks like a TV advert. This tells the audience that the character is fully awear that they live a privalaged life. She then goes on to say her life is ‘normal’ which is seemed to be slightly sarcastic as the way she id describing her typical morning is far from normal for the average person. She uses the words ‘way normal life’ this suggests shes unintelligent crating the steryotypical image of a dumb blonde that lives off of her fathers money.
The character is relateable to teenage girls as she is of the same age group and is what every teenage girl could want to be. She is young and pretty with the access to almost anything she could wish for. She is a representation of what every teenage girl dreams to be. This is why the audience is able to connect with the character.
It then goes to a shot which shows her father but we can only see the back of him suggesting he is a personally private person. However this shot does cleaely present their house which shows how wealthy they are. We see a large staircase with a chandelier hanging over it and huge paintings on the wall. This suggests that the father is a representation of their wealth and that this is his main contribution throughout the film. A pan is used to display as much of the house as possible
Through this film opening we get a clear sense on the age that this is about and aimed at, the gender it is aimed at and the overall essence of the film. It also gives a first impression on the main character, her family and how she lives.
